COWRA SHIRE COUNCIL

Cowra Council is the major service provider for parks, gardens, and visitor facilities for Cowra and its surrounding villages. Cowra Tourism Corporation also works closely with Cowra Council in the promotion of the many and varied historical, cultural, and natural attractions in our Shire.

Our district has a rich Indigenous and European heritage going back hundreds of years. The Prisoner of War Breakout in 1944 has also resulted in our community’s ongoing close links with Japan with a number of affiliated attractions to visit. The Cowra Japanese Garden is a tranquil sanctuary while the Japanese War Cemetery and former POW camp ruins provide a fascinating window into our turbulent past.Welcome to Cowra - the centre of world friendship. Nestled in the beautiful Lachlan Valley, Cowra offers a wonderful lifestyle with a unique blend of culture, history, arts, and the environment for visitors, residents, and the passing traveller to enjoy.

Cowra Shire also has a number of small villages that offer visitors a genuine Australian rural country experience. Cowra’s primary industry is agriculture and supporting industries, as well as small manufacturing. The beautiful Lachlan River runs through the heart of the Shire. We are also home to excellent food and wine producers, so take the time to visit our cellar doors and sample some of the best wine in the region.
Wyangala Dam is another popular attraction and a hub for a range of water sports. Up to 80,000 visitors each year visit the Wyangala Waters State Park for a variety of recreational activities from bushwalking and fishing to water-skiing and sailing.

So stay and say g’day! We will extend our warm hospitality during your time here and hope you relax and enjoy “the Cowra experience”.
